“Decorating your home isn’t just about making a room look pretty; it’s about creating an environment that is true to you and that inspires you to invest in yourself in the way you have invested in your space.” - Moorea Seal
I have been an avid follower of Moorea Seal for a few years now, daily checking her instagram for a new post or getting inspiration through her pinterest board. If you know me at all, you’ll know that if I like something or someone I am a wholehearted fan and fierce cheerleader. That applies to my closest friends and family, and sometimes even strangers. Her thoughtful and stylistic social media posts have always caught my eye -whether it’s a beautiful piece of jewellry or a pair of handcrafted leather shoes. Moorea is a strong advocate for mental health disorders and I’ve always appreciated her openness and vulnerability in sharing her own struggles with depression, anxiety and ADD. Her store is a great place to find unique and beautiful clothing, shoes, handmade jewellry, bags and quirky gifts, made by local designers. I know I like to support a company that honors small businesses and gives back to the community (she gives 7% of all profits to a non-profit organization) Check out her online store Moorea Seal or visit her at her storefront in Seattle.
In her own description Moorea Seal is a lady of many trades. She is a small business owner, a jewellry designer, an online curator and now a best-selling author of The 52 Lists Project and 52 Lists for Happiness. More recently her third published book is titled, Make Yourself at Home in the world: Design your space to discover your true self. This book gives you the inspiration to imagine the spaces in your home, to consider what is important to you and helps you to cultivate a space that truly reflects the person you are and who you want to be.
This book was one of my favorite Christmas presents this last year! It was more like a “To me, from me kind of book.” Haha! If you have a friend who loves DIY and home design, this is the book for them. It’s a beautiful coffee table and reference book you’ll continue coming back to for inspiration as you decorate your home. Within her book, Moorea walks you through each room of her house and her work space and shares advice on how to transform your home by asking key questions to consider as you’re thinking about each area of your living space. For instance, some of her questions about your living room include - “What statement does your living room currently make about you and your values? What mood/vibe/feeling do you want your living room to have? What colors reflect that mood?
The easy step-by-step DIY projects will inspire your creativity, (I’m already plotting my next trip to home depot!) She’s an avid thrifter and encourages you to think about using items you already own or suggests looking on craigslist for used items. If you’re unsure of where to begin there is a space to journal ideas in the Notes section at the back of the book.
Throughout the book, you are introduced to one of her creative friends and they share their homes and decor inspiration. I personally enjoyed the home design inside the home of Laura Gummerman (Her blog “The Band Wife” is amazing and full of decorating DIY inspiration. I’ve been a huge fan of A Beautiful Mess blog for years, and Laura does most of their DIY projects!). The Montessori style playroom in the home of Erin Perez Hagstrom really caught my eye too, and I’d like to implement some of those ideas for Izzy’s new Toddler/Big girl room.
I was generally inspired by all the different home design styles featured in the book - everything from clean simple designs to a mosaic of colorful retro kitchens. The south western design, rustic folk style, mid-century modern living rooms and bohemian chic styles were some of my personal favorites, and let’s not even talk about the beautiful indoor plant inspiration in this book! All the photography and illustrations are beautiful . The Photographs in the book are credited to Marissa Maharaj - swoon over her lifestyle photography here, and Illustrations are done by Julia Manchik (I’m obsessed with Julia and her husband, Yuriy’s photography, see their website, The Manchiks and soon you will be obsessed too!
Through Moorea's thoughtful essays you're encouraged to develop an understanding and appreciation of your story as you transform the spaces around you. Moorea also shares a part of her story and how she reflects and honors her history, upbringing, and her family in her home and what makes her home with her husband truly unique. She shares tips of how you can do the same. I love how everything in her home is layered in meaning and she brings elements into her home and workplace that remind her of her heritage and the legacy of her Grandparents. As a firm believer in buying beautiful useful things and thrifting, Moorea is my kind of lady! Please come over to my next house and help me style it?
My husband and I are currently renting a charming turn of the century 3 bedroom home in the beautiful neighborhood of Greenlake in Seattle and we have lived in it for 4 years. We’ve shared the space with a couple of friends who have lived in the basement over the years. I have wanted to decorate for so long and have in small ways but we’ve been limited in what we could do with the space. As a family our goals over the last few of years have been focused on travel back to South Africa, raising our young daughter and more travelling! David travels for his global health research work and over the last 2 years he’s probably been to 10 different countries, crazy I know, I lose track. I’m so proud of him! However this year, one of our big goals includes buying a house and becoming homeowners (for the first time!) In our next space our living room and dining area will be be my first focus in decorating. David and I love spending quality time with our friends and community in Seattle and we have enjoyed hosting our church community groups this last year. We're so excited to continue doing that in our new space. And over the next couple months we’ll begin a house search. In this crazy Seattle market. Aaahh! Prayers appreciated!
Ok, now go ahead and buy the book here on Amazon or here on Moorea Seal’s website.
